Ingredients:
- 6 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Toss the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch in a large bowl until every slice is evenly coated.
- Pour the mixture into a 9x9 inch baking dish, spreading them evenly to ensure consistent cooking.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients.
- Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized lumps remaining.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples, pressing down very lightly.
- Place the dish in the center rack of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is a deep golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling thick and slow around the edges.
- Allow the dish to cool for 10 minutes before serving to allow the juices to set into a syrup.
