Ingredients:

  • 6 cups (900g) Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp (2g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) lemon juice
  • 1 cup (90g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup (95g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 tsp (1g) salt

Instructions:

  1. At home: Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt in a sealable bag.
  2. At home: Toss sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and brown sugar in a separate container. Store both components chilled in a cooler.
  3. At the campfire: Pour the apple mixture into a 12-inch cast iron skillet or divide evenly into 6 double-layered foil packets.
  4. Using fingers, rub the cold cubed butter into the dry oat mixture until it forms pea-sized clumps.
  5. Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples, ensuring the edges are well-covered.
  6. If using a skillet, place on a grill grate over medium coals and cover with a lid or foil for 20-25 minutes. If using foil packets, place directly on medium coals for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat when apple juices are bubbling up the sides and the topping is mahogany-colored and golden-brown.
